GREET THE HEAT

‘In the Summertime when the weather is fine.. You could stretch up right and touch the sky..’ This hugely popular song by Shaggy is not something you would like to hum along when the mercury rises to a sweltering 45-50 degrees. Battling the heat waves becomes a priority during the merciless summer which could easily take a toll on you and your body. However, it could do very little if you are summer ready. Nourish yourself and get your summer glow on by pleasing your palette and indulging in some fresh foods. As you create some summery magic with your palette, remember to incorporate some hydrating ingredients into your cooking.

The first food that comes to our mind to beat this scorching heat is, of course, the watermelon which is the quintessential summer saviour. The refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients besides being fat-free. Break the monotony and dish out gorgeous salads like a Watermelon and Chicken Salad, Three Melon Mozzarella Salad or an Orzo salad with watermelon and feta. Cool off with some watermelon popsicles, watermelon jelly or sip on the perfect Watermelon Punch with fresh lime and crushed mint.

Summers are made for salads. Be it a Mango rice salad with grilled shrimp or a Pickled Strawberry and Roasted Beet Salad on Ricotta or a Snap Pea and Fennel Salad, it is an ideal way to gather all your favourite vegetables in one perfect bowl. Preparing cold soups for the summers could also be a good idea. Make it an enjoyable affair by trying your hands on variants like a Blueberry and Yoghurt Soup with a lime swirl, a Chilled Summer Borscht or a Buttermilk-Corn soup. Hot dogs also need not be the same run-of-the-mill kinds. For a fun and fresh twist add a summery topping of peaches, chopped jalapeños, and cilantro. For desserts, there are a variety of ravishing options you could create. A Kiwi Summer Limeade Pie, Baby Citrus Cheesecakes, a Black Forest Freezer Pie or a Tropical Ambrosia Shortcake could be just the thing as a summer crowd-pleaser.

Think cool and think innovative this season and you are sure to make peace with the flaming sun in the breeziest of ways!
