The Beautiful Balance of Savoury Dessert

 

The highlight of any meal is the sinfully quintessential dessert that comes at the end.  Whenever we go for buffets or dinner parties, no matter how much we eat we still save some space for dessert. And sometimes as an after guilt, we even regret about the quantity of sweets we have stuffed ourselves with. That is how much we fall for this sweet trap every single time without even thinking twice.

However, of late, this grand meal finale has gone over a savoury makeover. If sweets and desserts are not really your thing, or if you are the ones guilty of over-indulging, then perhaps some savoury desserts could be your option of tantalizing your taste buds. Wondering how desserts could be savoury? Don’t worry it is not about killing the sweet mojo of desserts.

Nowadays, Pastry Chefs, restaurants and bakeries are experimenting with savoury ingredients by infusing them into the traditional desserts to create a new and exciting flavour combination of sweet, sour and spicy flavours. Savoury dessert is not an alienated concept considering we already have vegetable based cakes such as carrot, beetroot and zucchini around us.

Sweet and savoury flavours complement each other very well when paired together. This gives an unexpected flavour punch to the dish. When we pair coffee and chocolate in a cake, even though the coffee is bitter in taste it elevates the chocolate flavour in it, and we can’t even taste the bitterness of the coffee added. This is the concept they are trying with savoury or spicy ingredients, by pairing them with desserts but in a much wider aspect.

When you indulge in desserts, you don’t stop with one bite you tend to overdo it ending up with guilt and a “too sweet in the stomach” feeling. Thanks to the booming trend of savoury dessert that has a lovely balance of flavours that is mild, earthy and light.

Be it a doughnut burger, bacon cupcake, chilli ice cream or a blue cheese macaroon – we are embracing this new trend of dessert with a savoury twist. The more offbeat it sounds, the more curiosity it creates in the minds of people. That is the reason why it is creating a good buzz and kicking up interest much sooner than expected.

We might not know much about the savoury desserts yet, but they are here for sure to play games with our taste buds in a good way. Also, when we are living in a world of infinite choices, we can expect the unexpected in food and beverages.
