Bowls are the New Plates


Whether we adopt it or not, food trends are something that keeps emerging every now and then, where some sustain and some just fade away. As the concept of ‘beinghealthy’takes a better hold on our lives, health food trends have become all the rage in recent years. This trend has made us re-discover the good old coupe way of eating, where food is served in small portions in a coupe; a shallow bowl.

Today, a lot of health freaks and fitness junkies have turned away from plates and they prefer to eat their meals out of bowls. This trend picked up with the introduction of smoothie bowls with an added touch of elegant garnish to it, which makes you forget that you’re even having something healthy.


People find the bowl concept to be very healthy and convenient compared to the plates because when you are eating out of a bowl, you tend to serve only small portions which are not the same with plates. Bowls not only help you from overeating but it also makes mixing up of food easy instead of getting pushed around the plate. It’s a convenient way of eating on-the-go without compromising on any nutrients. Nowadays, we have many restaurants serving one bowl-meal with a healthy and well-balanced portion of lean protein, vegetables, and grains.


It’s true that social media has a key role in the popularity of bowl food. It caught a lot of attention through Instagram as it is easy to see everything in the bowl with one top shot without a lot of prep. If you check the Instagram pictures under the #bowl, you will see some seriously good-looking pictures with an explosion of colours and textures. When you see these, honestly, it is difficult to go back to the plate mode.

The fact is, now the bowl trend is not limited only to the healthy eating community, most of the restaurants and cafes have also picked up serving chips, pasta and even some appetizers in a bowl or even a wired basket. Looking at how widely the bowl mania is spreading, one thing is for sure, that food in a bowl is here to stay.
