Celebrating World Chicken Day

Crossing multiple culinary boundaries with ease and symbolizing nurturance and potency, the chicken has never ceased to subjugate its lovers. The seemingly insignificant fowl has a deep spiritual and cultural significance in some places and religions too. The ancient Greeks even believed that the mighty lion feared the rooster, a symbol of valour and bravery. The super food that powers many of us is celebrated on the second Thursday of October each year. Hail the two-winged wonder!

Speaking of its history, it was discovered by the side of a road in Greece in the first decade of the fifth century BC. The Athenian general Themistocles, on his way to confront the invading Persian forces, stopped to watch two cocks fighting. History manifests how the Greeks went on to repel the invaders, preserving the civilization that honours those creatures.

In modern times, though the chicken has become a much loved and a favourite food of people. The nutritional contribution of chicken towards the world is also worth a mention. Researchers at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa recently analysed chicken intake and found out that a prudent chicken diet could help lower total cholesterol. We also cannot deny how it is one of the most popular proteins in the world.

Incorporating its flavours and constantly innovating with them truly proves the mettle of a cook. Out-of-the-box dining experiences can be crafted by chefs keeping in mind the on-going trends related to chicken. Infusing chicken with ethnic flavours is just one of the examples from a plentitude of others which make for vibrant gourmet experiences.

So bring in this World Chicken Day by whipping up a chicken dish that hits all marks- full of flavour, easy and healthy. No chickening out trying a completely different way of cooking and devouring this juicy piece of meat. This would for sure be the perfect way of basking in this day and paying a tribute to the contributions of this almost ubiquitous culinary delight of our era!
